Park Your Fears! Go Experiment! I Dare You!

What is is about fear that kills innovation and creativity?

  • Fear is your enemy, dressed as a friend.
  • Fear teases and torments you.
  • Fear is afraid you will change

We’re all afraid of change, failing. You name it – Fear has got it covered.

So how do you overcome your fear?

My answer:    I dress my fears in experimental clothing.

I talk a lot about experiments in my blog, in social media and in life. Even if I don’t say it – I think “Experiment” – That makes me feel comfortable pushing my boundaries. I sometimes call it “Play”, but then I’m a gamer.

I push other’s boundaries too. I push people to experiment.  It’s become a way to approach life. It gives huge freedom and courage. It impacts the people around me too. It helps me select the people I want in my life. Who’s coming in the Lunar Module with me today!

I invite people to join my experiments. It seems to work. I don’t feel afraid and people  join me. I think there is a lot to the idea of “building your muscle memory for side-stepping fear”. You  just got to practice. And a superhero suit sure helps.

So why not give it ago. What do your fears look like ,when dressed as a Lab Technician, a Librarian or a Spandex Superhero!

Is your next idea going to infinity and beyond? Tell me about an experiment you’d like to try in your business. If not tell me why. I double dare you! Where do you need more muscle memory?

I agree culture is fundemental but the truth is this is not just a company thing but a Global/Society issue.

You only have to look at the world we live in and FEAR as you discussed is parraliszing people, organisations, governments and our global society. Fear of losing what they have. The little man and the entrepreneurs who dare, are winning and growing their businesses, the large corporates appear impotent.

For me many of them have the wrong corporate values. "Maximization of Shareholder wealth" appears their dominant driver. Fear of losing Wealth is what is making them impotent.

In your case Nick your values are more deeply rooted than mere "money creation". Hence why you are liberated.

IanKnowlson Great point. I wish I had thought of it. It is so obvious now that I think about it. I have worked with and for a number of global companies and they are all impotent and lack drive and that indescribable passion to innovate. However, many of the smaller firms and entrepreneurs that I know and work with are all breathtakingly exciting by the sheer audacity of their approach to business.

I think we can all find some level of reflection in this. For most people I know, it is always the fear of the unknown that is most prominent. In my firm we have created a culture where it is ok to make mistakes provided we learn from them. Repeated mistakes always lead to a focus on coaching rather than blame but we want people to push the envelope and we recognise that in doing so, sometimes you make big steps forward, other times you make mistakes. It is all part of the learning process.

I am interested in how other leaders handle this within their culture?

Peterborner I'm with you. It all stems from culture. For me, most of what I do is outside the company ( listly or gifttrap ). I'm often encouraging others to innovate or be bold or to push their boundaries. I guess there is really no difference - inside or out

In the end were all people. We all want to feel safe. I feel strongly that I own the resposibility to create that space around me that makes others feel safe.

This is a trick and a concept I learned from samparotto She's a responsibility Zen master. It's taken me a while to truly grasp it, but now I do and I have so much more freedom as a result. The magic comes when you feel empowered to pass that freedom on to others.

nickkelletPeterbornerlistlygifttrapsamparottoianknowlson I say you....Hi everyone! I'm loving this thread. This is truth, in the end - we are all people. Leaders that learn to carefully listen and take action will thrive. There is nothing to fear but standing still with your vision.

Culture is what drives from the inside first and from the outside looking in. Thanks for this invaluable reminder.

@listly@gifttrap@samparottonickkellet IanKnowlson MeghanMBiro Isn't this what separates leaders from the rest? The ability to recognise the strength of every individual in your team and the vision to create an environment where they have the confidence to experiment without fear of reproach, in my mind, defines a leader.
